When Your Voice is Silent . . . But Your Message is Still Speaking

"Silence is a time of self-reflection. We reflect on who we were, look at who we are, and envision who we could be, all to become our best selves." -Author Unknown

When Your Voice is Silent . . . But Your Message is Still Speaking

Greetings SOAR! readers, and a super warm WELCOME to our newest subscribers! I hope you all have been safe and warm during the recent Winter storm. Okay, let's get into it . . .

When Your Voice Is Silent . . . But Your Message Is Still Speaking

Just weeks ago, I was on a beautiful high.

I had just returned from several soul-filling days at a women’s retreat in Mexico -- rested, restored, inspired, and overflowing. My spirit felt light. My heart felt full. My mind was clear.

And then . . . life shifted.

During the long plane ride home, a dry cough crept in. Within days, I was in bed all day, followed by a doctor’s visit that confirmed the flu. What surprised me most wasn’t just how quickly I went from soaring to still -- but how long the recovery has taken. Nearly three weeks later, the final stage of healing showed up as something completely unexpected for me: laryngitis.

Confirmed by my doctor.

And accompanied by one very firm instruction:

Rest your voice. Completely.

That sentence stopped me in my tracks.

I don’t think I’ve ever been officially diagnosed with laryngitis before. There’s something unsettling -- almost disorienting -- about realizing that you literally have no voice. I can’t speak above a whisper (I’m actually not supposed to whisper at all). I can’t carry a conversation. I can’t pick up the phone and talk the way I’m used to.

For someone whose work, calling, and identity are deeply connected to speaking . . . that’s a lot to sit with.

And so, I’ve been sitting with it.

The Paradox I Can’t Ignore

Here’s the truth I’ve been wrestling with:

Even though I don’t currently have a physical voice, I am not voiceless.

My voice still matters.
My message still matters.
My presence still matters.

And yet, this season has forced me to ask deeper questions -- questions I might have talked right past if my voice had never gone silent.

  • Is God inviting me to be quieter and more introspective?
  • Is this an opportunity to listen more deeply instead of always speaking?
  • What might I hear -- internally and spiritually -- if I resist the urge to fill every space with words?
  • What does surrender look like when I can’t “do” things the way I normally do them?

I even have a speaking engagement scheduled for next week, and I had to email the organizer to explain my current condition -- just in case my voice hasn’t returned. That moment alone required humility, trust, and a willingness to release control.

What’s also been surprisingly challenging is not being able to call family and friends. I’m so accustomed to checking on loved ones by phone -- with my voice. Now, I can’t. That limitation has required me to yield in ways I didn’t expect. To trust God with the people I love. To rest in the knowing that I don’t have to be the connector, the checker, the constant communicator.

Even at home, I’m using very few words with my husband. Not because I don’t have anything to say -- but because I’m honoring the instruction to be still.

And in that stillness, I’m learning something important:

Silence does not cancel purpose.

Your Voice Is Bigger Than Sound

So, here’s the lesson I don’t want to miss -- and I don’t want you to miss it either:

Your voice is not limited to the sound that comes out of your mouth.

Your voice shows up in:

  • How you listen
  • How you respond (or choose not to)
  • The boundaries you set
  • The energy you bring into a room
  • The choices you make when no one is watching
  • The way you trust God when control is stripped away

There are seasons when our voices are loud and public -- and seasons when they are quiet, internal, and sacred.

Both matter.

Both speak.

Both shape who we are becoming.

If you’re in a season where something has been taken away, slowed down, or muted -- don’t rush past it. There may be wisdom there. There may be healing there. There may be a deeper alignment waiting for you on the other side of the silence.

I may not have my full physical voice right now -- but make no mistake:

I am not voiceless.
And neither are you.

Reflection & Journaling Questions

Take your time with these. Don’t rush them.

  1. Where in your life do you feel “muted” right now -- and what emotions come up when you sit with that?
  2. In what ways have you equated your value or influence with being heard, visible, or productive?
  3. What might God be inviting you to notice, learn, or release during a quieter season?
  4. How do you use your voice beyond spoken words?
  5. What would it look like to trust the process instead of trying to control the outcome?
  6. If your current season had a message, what do you believe it’s trying to teach you?

If This Resonated . . . Your Next Step

If this reflection stirred something in you, your next step is not to ignore it -- it’s to go deeper.

  • If you’re navigating a season of transition, loss of momentum, or identity shifts, my book It’s Your Time to SOAR! will help you reconnect with your purpose and rediscover your inner voice.
  • If you’re ready to do the deeper work of identifying what’s been holding you back, my Getting Out of Your Own Way Reflection & Action Workbook is designed to guide you step by step.
  • And if you know you need personalized support, clarity, and accountability, I invite you to explore coaching with me -- because you don’t have to find your way through this season alone.

Your voice matters -- even when it’s quiet.

And sometimes, the most powerful transformation happens when we finally stop talking long enough to listen.
